His last album was entitled Urban Legend and he's the self-proclaimed King of The South. Therefore, T.I. wanted a modest title for his next project. So, he named it King. We're being sarcastic...
In all seriousness, T.I. has reason to puff his chest out, as he admirably replaces Urban Legend anthems like "ASAP," "U Don't Know Me," "Bring Em Out" and "Motivation," with fresh cuts like "Front Back," "Why You Wanna," "I'm Straight" and "What You Know" off his new King album.
"What You Know," the album's lead single produced by DJ Toomp, has T.I. combining his brash, borderline cocky boss talk with yet another catchy hook. Later, on "Why You Wanna," Tip ups the sensitivity factor, but doesn't lose a hint of confidence, when he asks, "In a relationship and faithful to a n---- so wack / Now why you wanna go and do that?" The song cleverly uses a Crystal Waters' sample, one that's likely to bring T.I. even closer to his constantly growing file of female fans.
The balance continues, as "Live In the Sky" featuring Jamie Foxx has T.I. questioning the afterlife, while "Ride With Me" has Tip taking fans through a wild journey in Atlanta.
Dating back to the platinum-certified Urban Legend, T.I. utilizes continuity and solid track placement on King to connect the two projects. For example, the first track on Urban Legend, "Tha King," was an up-tempo hard hitting track, which sampled Run-DMC. Well, fast forward and the intro track on King is entitled, "King Back," a stirring, climactic Just Blazed-produced cut, which T.I. excels on. Each respective cut manages to grab listeners' ears within seconds.
Although cuts like "Stand Up Guy" and possibly even, "Get It" could be deemed as filler tracks, what becomes more than evident with his new set is the point that if T.I. is not officially the reigning King yet, he's definitely among those in the King's court.
