At the end of T-Pain's brand new remix for "Can't Believe It," featuring Justin Timberlake, he says that the Auto-Tune effect is "on its way out." Why? Especially after he's made a career out of its use.

In a interview with MTV, Teddy Pain clarified what he meant. "Not for me," Pain explained, "for everybody else."

However, if artists want to make use of the popular Auto-Tune effect, he says he'll give them his blessing ... for a fee. Diddy recently paid Pain for a collaboration, and now he feels everyone else should to.

"I gave T-Pain one point on my [upcoming] album for using the Auto-Tune," Diddy revealed on during "TRL's" Finale on Sunday night (November 16).

"Sign the papers," Pain told MTV. "Diddy actually gave me royalties on this album just for using Auto-Tune. He signed the contract and everything. If I can do that with Diddy, somebody else better be signing something. It's Diddy. He didn't have to involve me at all. ... I'm writing and producing on his album, and he gave me extra royalties on top of that for using something I just brought back."

T-Pain's latest album, Thr33 Ringz, hit stores last week, and debuts at #4 on this week's Billboard 200. The album features collaborations with some major star power, including Ludacris, Chris Brown, Lil Wayne, T.I., Akon, and Kanye West, among others.

In addition, the singer plans to kick off a tour, called I Am Music, this December, and will hit the rode with Keyshia Cole, Gym Class Heroes, and Lil Wayne.

Um does anybody else here know that autotune is a program and a voice box is an analog tube hooked up to a synthesizer. similar sounds but different processes and skills. the people before pain had a tube in their mouth so you can.t knock him for making a new software popular

Gotta give props to everyone on this thread except mrsthing for havin' enough knowledge to know that T-Pain's claims to the Auto-Tune is bullshit. Also, MEGA-props to niggafrommemphis and CLB for knowin' that there were people using vocoders and shit even before Roger Troutman. Real knowledge.

Many continued blessing for the readers of this message board. First, I strongly believe that T-Pain needs to give props to the man and true inventor of this style: Mr. Roger Troutman from Middletown, OHIO. I think this is important because it gives our youth a full history and cultural awareness of Black Music History. The youth need to know where this style came from. Lastly, I want peoples to fully realize the overall contribution that OHIO has made on Black Music. We are the originators of that West Coast Sound that Dre/Snoop/Etc made so popular. A lot of Biggie's and Jay's work have used samples by Ohio artists and groups. Ohio is truly a remarkable music ground that many overlook and under appreciate. Peace Ya'll. Love is the Hate

Yes It's been established a 100 times now Roger Troutman was the 1st. But the question is who else was using the auto tune when T-Pain started using it? I'm not takin anything away from Troutman. May he rest in peace but the article is discussing what's happinin today not who created the style 1st.

Yo, T-Pain found this shit on accident anyway. The way autotune is supposed to work is it takes a bunch of recordings of 1 track, and match up the best of the tries of any given note to make it match the music as it is written. Problem is T-Pain is such a bad singer that it never matched and he accidentally found this effect. All the others before him were using actual voice boxes, T-Pain stumbled across this because he can't sing for shit. So essentially, he is the first to do this, but how can one copyright being a bad singer.
