U.K. rapper M.I.A. caused a lot of chatter Saturday night (October 11) when she performed at the Diesel xXx Rock + Roll Circus in Brooklyn. The rapper was dressed in tight spandex that displayed a rather large baby bump.
While prior to the show, most weren't aware she was expecting, M.I.A. confirmed her pregnancy to Pitchfork Media earlier in the evening.
"I'm creating a baby," she told the website.
According to MTV, it was rumored that over the summer the rapper canceled summer tour place because of a pregnancy, but nothing was confirmed.
M.I.A. says the unexpected success of her nearly year-old song "Paper Planes" caused a shift in her plans.
"When I found out I was pregnant and 'Paper Planes' was in the iTunes top 10," the singer said, "it seemed like the whole world was reshuffled in one week, and all my plans went out the window. And that's the lesson ... you can't make plans, and you can't say sh**."
She is expecting with her fiancé Ben Brewer, leader singer of the Exit. While M.I.A. did not divulge any further details regarding her child, she made sure to tell her young fans, she was engaged "first, then I got pregnant, kids."
M.I.A. is currently hard at work on the follow-up to her album Kala, but says in the meantime, she needs to show her family her bump.
"I have to do the rounds -- go see my family and show them the belly," she said.
