Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who's also been dubbed the Hip-Hop Mayor in the past, has been ordered to spend the night in jail after a judge ruled he violated the terms of his bond in his perjury case by making a business trip to Canada without notifying the court.

According to the Associated Press, Judge Ronald Giles ordered the Hip-Hop Mayor to jail Thursday (August 7), following an apology by Kilpatrick.

The mayor apologized to the court, telling the judge that over the past seven months, "I've been living in an incredible state of pressure and scrutiny." Giles didn't care, ordering him to jail anyway, claiming he would have given any defendant the same treatment.

Last month, Kilpatrick took a trip to Canada without the court's permission, prompting the county prosecutor's office to request that he be punished for his actions, resulting in the jail stint.

Kilpatrick's legal team does not agree with the ruling. "The judge did what he thought was right. We don't agree," defense lawyer James Thomas told the AP.

Earlier in the day, the mayor waived his right to a preliminary examination and will head to trial on perjury and other criminal charges, which -- if convicted -- could land him in prison for up to 15 years.

The charges stem from text messages that appear to show Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, lied under oath when they testified in a police whistle-blower lawsuit that they had not had a sexual relationship or discussed the firing of a police official.
