A Manhattan jury found Remy Ma guilty of assault on Thursday (March 27) in state Supreme Court.
The 26-year-old rapper was convicted of two charges of assault, and now faces up to 25 years in prison.
She wiped away tears as the verdict was handed down, then "wailed loudly and sobbed openly" as she left the courtroom in handcuffs, according to the Associated Press.
The charges stem from an incident in July 2007 where Remy Ma accused Makeda Barnes-Joseph of stealing $3,000 from her purse outside of a trendy Manhattan hotspot. The two struggled inside Barnes-Joseph's vehicle and gunshot went off, leaving Barnes-Joseph with a gunshot wound in the abdomen.
The rapper fled the scene in an SUV, but crashed nearby.
Since the incident, neither the money nor the weapon has been found.
In a statement to MTV on Thursday, Remy's attorney, Ivan Fisher said he plans to file an appeal for the rapper immediately.
"The jury acquitted the second half of the indictment," he said, referring to tampering and intimidation charges. "That will help the appeal because that evidence, those charges, shouldn't have been in the case to begin with. And there are other issues we think may turn the conviction around."
