DMC, of the legendary hip-hop group Run-DMC, achieved a milestone in his career on Monday night (September 24) when he was awarded an Emmy for his critically acclaimed VH1 "Rock Doc" documentary, "DMC: My Adoption Journey."

He received the accolade at New York's Sheraton New York Hotel and Towers on Monday night during the 28th Annual Emmy Awards, in front of more than 1,000 media industry executives, journalists, and producers who attended the event.

DMC's documentary beat out CBS News' 60 Minutes "I'm Mike Wallace: A 60 Minutes Tribute," PBS' Cinemax's "Favela Rising" and PBS's "Lomax the Song Hunter," a documentary based on legendary record man Alan Lomax.

For the veteran rapper, the win is a new beginning for all the foster kids out there, he recently told Allhiphop.com. "For me it's a whole nother level," DMC told the website. "I got the foundation of hip-hop I'm representing. Now the mission has begun for sure. This is the beginning of something new for all the foster kids out there. It shows me that I touched people's lives. This next project is going to change lives, make history and change the world."

Six years ago, at the age of 35, DMC (real name: Darryl McDaniels) made a startling discovery: he was adopted. Suddenly everything he thought he knew about himself changed. This revelation occurred after the death of Jam Master Jay and while DMC was going through a deep depression. He began to question his purpose and place in life. DMC invited VH1 on his journey to track down this other family he never knew was out there. "DMC: My Adoption" documented that search.

As DMC embarked on his quest, he had little information to go on. Given only what might be his biological mother's name, DMC sought help in many places. The four month search created a roller coaster of emotions as DMC was faced with daily disappointments mixed with hope. All the while, his adoptive family struggled to understand his need to search for his roots. The end result provided closure for DMC and an important piece of clarity on life that he was looking for.

Despite the huge accomplishment with the win of the Emmy, DMC reveals he was not even thinking about the award. "I was not even focused on the award," DMC told Allhiphop.com. "It was crazy, Dan Rather, Tom Brokaw was there. Ted Koppel walked over to me, I stood up, he said nice job, nice job, it's a great thing you are doing. I was speechless."

The award was also a first for VH1's "Rock Docs," who have produced a number of other documentaries including "Heavy: The Story of Metal," "The Drug Years," "Last Days of Left Eye," "Bling'd: Blood, Diamonds and Hip Hop," "The U.S. vs. John Lennon," "Monterey 40," "NY77: The Coolest Year In Hell" and the upcoming "Amazing Journey: The Story of The Who," among others.

In related news, DMC is currently working on a new, follow up documentary titled "DMC: Deliver My Children," which will focus to shed light on the foster care system in the United States.
