More details regarding the shooting that left D12 member Proof dead have surfaced.
Police investigating the nightclub shooting questioned bouncer Mario Etheridge, 28, on Wednesday (April 12) in the fatal shooting of D12 member Proof. According to the 28-year-old suspect, Proof was the first to shoot, hitting Keith Bender in the head, leaving him critically wounded.
"He came in because the Detroit Police Department asked him to," Etheridge's attorney, Randall Upshaw, told WXYZ-TV. "Does that sound like a murderer?"
Investigators believe Proof was shot after he pistol-whipped and shot Bender, who is Etheridge's cousin, at the CCC club on Eight Mile Road. A police spokeswoman said that if Proof was shot in self-defense or to protect someone else, the person who pulled the trigger may not be charged.
Upshaw declined to say whether Etheridge shot Proof, but stated that the shooter only did so in self-defense.
"The understanding of every witness we've spoken to is that Proof pulled out a weapon," Upshaw said. "Proof shot Keith in the face, and Keith was unarmed."
Proof was shot three times in the head and the chest, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner's Office. He was pronounced dead at St. John Conner Creek Village in Detroit on Tuesday morning (April 11) (see "D12's Proof Shot And Killed At Detroit Club").
According to the Detroit Free Press, authorities spent Wednesday trying to round up more than 40 people they said they believed might have information about what happened at the club that morning.
