Mariah Carey's new album, The Emancipation of Mimi, sold more than 403,000 copies in its first week, making it no. 1 on the Billboard charts. In celebration of the number one spot, Carey partied it up at Cipriani's in New York Thursday night (April 21) with the likes of Jay-Z, Ice-T, Memphis Bleek, Kanye West, P. Diddy, L.A. Reid, Jermaine Dupri and Christina Milian. ...
Damon Dash isn't letting the sell of Roc-A-Fella to Def Jam hold him at back what so ever. Already, the music mogul, who produced the Kevin Bacon drama "The Woodsman," will next produce "Shadowboxer" with Cuba Gooding Jr., Helen Mirren and Macy Gray, according to MTV. "It's about a hit man and a hit woman, one being the stepmother and one being the stepson, so you've got your very different situations," Dash said to MTV. "It's a very well-written script, another piece of art." ...
As head of urban music at Virgin Music, Jermaine Dupri is preparing his first release with the label via his So So Def imprint. Young, Fly and Flashy Vol. 1 will be a compilation of So So Def artists featuring Daz, Pastor Troy, and newcomers T. Waters, Young Capone and Johnta. The album is due in stores July 19, and the first single is set to be "Gotta Getcha." ...
There hasn't been much news on R. Kelly's child porn case as of late. But according to MTV, Kelly was due in court Thursday (April 21), and won't have to make an appearance until next week. Reportedly, the singer got a continuance for a pretrial hearing until April 29, according to the Cook County state attorney's office in Illinois. ... According to Allhiphop, a Georgia man is suing Luther "Uncle Luke" Campbell and Luke Records for allegedly featuring the man with two women in "Uncle Luke's Freakshow, Volume III." The man, who has been identified as Keith Torrance, has filed suit citing invasion of privacy, emotional distress and battery. Torrence claims that two of Luke's female employees held him against his will, and enticed him into stripping in front of a crowd while the cameras were rolling. ...
The Game has reportedly been hit with suit for allegedly assaulting radio host Kwasi "DJ Zxulu" Jones formerly of 93.9 WKYS-FM in Washington, D.C. on January 21st, 2005. According to Allhiphop.com, Jones is seeking $280 million in damages, while The Game (real name: Jayceon Taylor) is being formally charged with assault and battery charges. ...
Underground mainstay and Souls of Mischief/Hieroglyphics member Opio has ventured out on his own, and is preparing a solo album, titled Triangulation Station. Opio describes the new album as a blend of sounds originating from his musical upbringing. "My father was a musician," said Opio. "I was always exposed to all different music; Classical, a lot of jazz.. Reggae, rock... Hip-hop was just the combination of all that to me." ... Mathew Knowles' Sanctuary Urban Group will release an album of unreleased music from the late Rick James on August 2. The record will include a duet with Ty James, Rick's daughter. ...
