AIDS awareness was in full force Thursday night (March 31) at the jammed packed Spirit night club in New York City, where LIFEbeat threw its third Hearts & Voices AIDS Benefit Concert. The concert -- pegged the Reggaeton Explosion -- featured mega star Tego Calderon, and Bachata super group Aventura.
The show, hosted by Power 105.1 DJ Tony Touch, opened to an immense crowd of Latino teens with upstarts NOVA, Chavito, and universal records recording artist Sucio.
Many others were on hand to show their support for the cause including Julissa of BET'S "The Center," radio personality ED Lover, and Legendary night club dancers, The Copa Cabana Girls. Also in attendance was Nicole of the duo Nina Sky, who expressed how important it was to raise awareness for the disease.
"It's always good to come out to support something that has a meaning," Nicole of Nina Sky told BallerStatus.com. "It's for Aids awareness, a lot of people dust it off, they don't realize how important an issue it is. It's especially important with so many young kids having sex."
According to the 2004 United Nations AIDS Report, Latino teens in the United States made up 15 percent of the national teenage population, ranging from ages 13-19, and account for 21 percent of the cumulative AIDS cases.
When Aventura took the stage, their core female fans fawned over their every move, but lead singer Anthony Santos got the theme of the night across when he said he even though sex is one of the best things, "it's not worth dying for."
Anticipation built for headliner Tego Calderon, who came out in a white jump suit that said "Jamaica" across his chest. The Reggeaton ambassador perfumed songs off his albums El Abayarde, and El Enemy De Los Guasbiri, and the crowd reached a euphoric state when Tego performed the "Lean Back" remix with Tony Touch.
Although a success outing, the important issue was that LIFEbeat's message was spread throughout the night. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the fight against AIDS, as all the artists on the showcase performed for free to show their support for the cause.
