Hip-hop dominated Sunday's (November 14) 32nd annual American Music Awards, held at Los Angeles' Shrine Auditorium. Outkast took home top honors with three AMAs, while Usher followed suit with four awards in all the categories he was nominated in.
Big Boi was the only Outkast members present, stating that Andre 3000 was in London filming a movie, but the duo still took home awards for favorite pop/rock band, favorite rap/hip-hop album and best rap/hip hop group.
During Big Boi's acceptance speech, he paid homage to the late Ol' Dirty Bastard, who passed just a day before (see "Ol' Dirty Bastard Dies At 35"). "Rest in peace Ol' Dirty Bastard," Big Boi said. "We love you."
R&B breakout, Usher, snagged AMAs for favorite male soul/R&B artist, best pop/rock artist, best soul/R&B album and best pop album for Confessions, which sold more than 1 million copies in its debut week.
Other winners included Alicia Keys took home an AMA for favorite female artist in the soul/R&B category.
Performers of the night included Alicia Keys, Snoop Dogg and Pharrell Williams, and Kayne West.
West, who came up empty handed, was unhappy with the awards' outcome. He was nominated in three categories and was shut out of them all, including best new artist, which went to country singer Gretchen Wilson.
"I feel I was definitely robbed, I was the best new artist this year," West said. "I don't know if I'll be back at this award show next year."
