Bay Area rapper Mac Dre was gunned down on Monday (November 1) in Kansas City, Missouri, while riding in a van on the highway.
The rapper (real name: Andre Hicks) was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:30 a.m., when another vehicle pulled alongside the vehicle he was riding in and opened fire.
According to Billboard.com, the van swerved across the highway median, across the southbound lanes and down a steep embankment. Hicks was thrown from the vehicle, but is said to have died from the shooting, not the accident. The driver of the van then crawled away from the wreckage and went for help.
Mac Dre was in Kansas City for a performance that was scheduled for Friday (October 29), but stayed in the city over the weekend. Police have yet to find a motive for the attack.
The rapper recorded more than a dozen albums since 1989 and was under investigation in the early '90s for his involvement in a string of bank robberies in the Bay Area. The investigation led to the rapper being convicted and charged with conspiracy to commit bank robbery after he, and several others, were arrested while preparing to rob a bank. He was released from prison in 1996.
Mac Dre's death marks the second rapper to be fatally killed in Kansas City this year. Ramone C. Davis, 31, of San Diego, died on March 22 when a man tried to rob him of 10 pounds of marijuana. A 27-year-old Kansas City man was charged in the case.
