"So I got on the scale today..." And saw that I lost three pounds last week. It made me more motivated so I hit the cardio a little harder today, but that's neither here nor there. Believe it or not, the music business is very superficial and your appearance plays a big part of your overall success.
Now before you jump to conclusions don't misunderstand my point. You don't have to be a model or anything, but you definitely need to be aware of your image. Me personally, I've always been a ladies man way before music, but I actually downplay that pretty boy shhh I usually be on because that's not important to me when it comes to music. Regardless though, I need to be in good shape for many different reasons (photoshoots, stamina, clothing ads etc.) and I also have to look good when I go out to events (it's one thing to be in the studio, I could sleep in there for days in the same clothes, but you need to be presentable to the public) in the city. It's almost like a uniform these days. The bottomline is you need to look the part.
The reason I brought this up is because a lot of unsigned artists don't understand that it's apart your job to maintain your public image. This doesn't just relate to personal looks either. If you gonna play that tuff guy shhhh in your music, you better not be wearing tight jeans and colorful t-shirts, lol. If your gonna talk about jewelry, cars and money when I see you, you better be pulling up in something nice or rocking something heavy. Ladies always talking sexy should be wearing sexy clothes, so on and so forth, but I'm sure you understand where I'm going with this. That's why you will never really catch me talking about some out of this world shhh in my music because that doesn't match me or my image. Anyone who knows me personally knows that I am the type that doesn't follow trends and such, so my image is essentially "down to earth." Yours may differ though, just realize that many eyes are on you in this business and you need to be aware of that.
In this egotistical, superficial, and down right narcissistic realm you have to be aware of how you look, period. No matter what tho remember this golden rule. Just be yourself.
