The Garment District: Soulja Boy Got Bathing Apes! I Am Filled With Blatant Hate!
Published: Tuesday - August 21, 2007
Words by Arnold T. Pants
Now that Soulja Boy has the MTV Jam of the week, I can formally congratulate him for being 5 years late on the BAPE trend. I briefly considered buying some [of the shoes] in 2002, then thought better of it (I have a few pieces of Bathing Ape, but I would bet most people couldn't peg them as BAPE from afar). Am I wrong in thinking that the vogue for beats made by Mr. Collipark is also a few years behind? In any event, the whole song/Youtube dance/celebration of beat trends collage that is integral to today's hit hip-hop record is lost on me. Respect to Soulja Boy for making it, but damn, kids today need to be more inventive.
(Side note: My thoughts on Soulja Boy have caused some ruction in the family. Young Gritz thinks "the dance is kinda the jam." But, he also thinks Sporty Spice is the sexiest spice girl... and, I believe that sours the validity of his opinions.)
Now that the hate is out of my system, back to more banal commentary.
Limited print BallerStatus Tee.
This tee came through the post last week. Good looking out Jay!
Air Force Ones (Paris edition).
There is something about the mid-soles on these joints that just don't sit well. Perhaps I am too old. I was all for it when Nike put text and texture into the mid-sole, but these come off as forced. If you think I am wrong, which surely many of you will, these are the Paris edition of the world cities pack and are creeping into stores now.
Hybrid sneakers are all the rage. Well, not really, but there are a few Nikes coming out merging models. The recent Air Max 90 boot and the P-Rod free are some examples. Not to be outdone there are rumors floating about cyberspace (I saw this pic first on Niketalk) of a Jordan XII/Air force one marriage. I like the Jordan XII. I like Air Force 1s.
Air Jordan XII.
However, it seems when the two have sex the offspring looks like Charlie Baltimore; i.e. intriguing, but ultimately not that sexy. Better pictures may change my mind, but for now I am certain in my opinion that this was a bad idea.
Thanks to the people who have read and commented on recent entries. Since I have been negligent, here are a few links to places I have mentioned over the last few months that may come in handy for people (hopefully this will answer some of the questions in past comments). Someone also asked "How was that place in London?" If you are referring to the Maharishi store, it is amazing, blurs the line between gallery, museum and retail space quite remarkably.
Shout out to my man TWISE who had a mildly successful show last week, Myspace.com/TheWize. Also congrats are due to Isaiah Smith, whose debut album just dropped (CDBaby.com). I met him on the Chinatown bus some months back when I was headed up to NY. He is a humble dude and I wish him the best of luck. For those of you in Miami, he is opening for Ne-Yo on the 27th.
