Georges St-Pierre Dominates Matt Serra To Regain UFC Title

UFC 83 was sold-out on Saturday (April 19) in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and the hometown hero, Georges St-Pierre did not disappoint his country men, by reclaiming his welterweight title with a second round TKO of Matt Serra.

The Pierre-Serra match was the night's main event, and as most expected, Pierre dominated with ease, avenging a loss against Serra last year that stripped him of his title.

The match began quickly with St-Pierre avoiding strikes from Serra for a quick takedown, which was the main theme of the match. While Serra lasted the first round, most in guard while St-Pierre attempted passes and strikes, the second was more deja vu for the champ.

There was two takedowns in the second, followed by stand up exchange, and then the referee finally stepping in, when Serra found himself in a turtle position taking brutal knees to the ribs.

St-Pierre just simply overwhelming Serra, and recording his 16th MMA win, while Serra recorded with fifth loss.

As for what's next? Talking to the press, UFC president Dana White and St-Pierre said, after the match, that Jon Fitch by be next... or possibly a champion vs. champion match with Anderson Silva, their middleweight champion.

"You can play baseball against your friends, but you can't play UFC. I will never fight a friend. Maybe I'd do it for a super fight," Pierre said.

The co-main event was former middleweight champion Rich Franklin versus and Travis Lutter, both of whom were fighting to maintain their relevance within the sport.

It was billed as clash of styles -- with Lutter boasting fierce grappling skills, and Franklin as a phenomenal striker. It did not live up to the hype, however.

While Lutter took quickly to the ground in the first round -- making it obvious he wanted to work to his advantages -- it didn't matter. Because when the second round came, Lutter seemed to have run out of gas, eating a series of punches and knees before the ref gave showed mercy by putting a stop to it.

The event was the UFC's first-ever in Canada, and after the fanfare and response to St. Pierre, there may be more in the future.

UFC 83 is coming up soon on May 24th, with the main event being BJ Penn versus Sean Sherk, followed in June by UFC 85 with Chuck Liddell and Rashad Evans.
