The widely popular computer and video game, "The Sims," reached a milestone Wednesday (April 16) when it reached the 100 million units mark.
The long popular game for computers has been available since 2000, and the span of eight years plus, it's reached the astronomical number mark, putting it at the top of the ranks in all-time video game sales, alongside classics like Nintendo's Mario and Pokemon games, which have sold more than 201 million and 175 million units respectively, as well as Take-Two Interactive Software Inc.'s "Grand Theft Auto" series, which has sold more than 65 million copies, according to a report from the Associated Press.
"At this milestone, we want to thank players of 'The Sims' everywhere for making 'The Sims' such a worldwide phenomenon," said Rod Humble, head of studio for the game's label. "'The Sims' has been an interactive experience for people around the globe to explore their passion for creativity and we're thrilled to be a part of that. From building houses and relationships, from the first kiss to a toddler's first step, from kitchen fires -- and even visits from ghosts, players have told more than 100 million unique and fun stories!"
If you've been under a rock for the past eight years or haven't really seen "The Sims" for some odd reason, it's a simulation game where players create homes, businesses and guide the day-to-day lives of their "Sims" characters. It can also be played off or online as well, and has been published in 60 countries and in 22 languages.
According to reports, the game garners about a 60% audience of women, which is a rarity in the video game world, dominated by titles targeted toward 20-something men and teenage boys.
This, according to analysts, has contributed to its enormous popularity over the years.
Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), the game's publisher, says players find a "welcome release" in creating their own world of characters.
It also spawns creativity. Fans have uploaded more than 100,000 "Sims" movies to YouTube, said the AP -- some of which include a "Sims" version of Michael Jackson's "Thriller" and the Broadway musical "Rent."
"The Sims" online community is also massive, boasting 4.2 million unique visitors each month, said EA.
