Run-DMC To Receive Lifetime Achievement Award At Grammys

Pioneering hip-hop group Run-DMC is set to be honored at the upcoming 2016 Grammys with this year's Lifetime Achievement Award.

Group member Rev Run took to Twitter on Wednesday (Jan. 13), declaring the group the first rappers to get the award.

"I just got a call from the Grammys!! They shocked me!! We're the first rappers to get this award!! Shocked! Grateful!. God is good!!! I’m so honored to be a #GRAMMYs Lifetime Achievement Award recipient this year. Thank you to the Recording Academy," he tweeted.

Run-DMC became the first rap group to be nominated in 1986, when they were up for Best R&B Vocal Performance, because the rap category hadn't been formed yet.

Additionally, the Recording Academy will also be giving honorary awards to Celia Cruz, Earth Wind & Fire, John Cage, Ruth Brown, Jefferson Airplane, Herbie Hancock, and Linda Ronstadt.

The 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards airs Feb. 15th at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.
