Hawks Retire Dikembe Mutombo’s No. 55 Jersey
The Atlanta Hawks retired Dikembe Mutombo's No. 55 jersey Tuesday night (Nov. 24), in honor of his Hall of Fame enshrinement.
The NBA legend signed with the Hawks as a free agent in 1996, playing with the team for nearly five seasons.
"I don't think I ever thought my jersey would be retired," Mutombo told reporters after his jersey was hung in the rafters during a halftime ceremony of the Hawks' 121-97 win over the Boston Celtics. "My name will stay forever."
Mutombo was a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year and eight-time All-Star, and ranks second on the NBA's career blocked shots list and 20th in rebounds.
He was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame two months ago.
