Kanye West Explains Why He Calls Himself “A Genius”
Kanye West sat down for an extensive interview with SHOWstudio recently, where he touches on everything from his career in fashion to why he labels himself "a genius."
Regarding the "genius" label, Kanye says he chooses to refer to himself with the term, because otherwise, he's called a "celebrity," "n*gger" or "rapper."
"Because otherwise, I'm called 'celebrity.' I'm called 'n*gger.' I'm called 'rapper. And when they use the word 'celebrity,' 'n*gger' or 'rapper,' it's not in a positive way," Kanye explained. "All those words can be used in an extremely positive way. 'What's up, my n*gga?' But that's not the way it's used. So, I have to define who I am. All of my aspirations are things that currently only 60-year-old white people do. So, I have to redefine and let people know exactly who I am."
When asked about new music, Kanye says that the majority of what is considered popular in music presently is based off of things he's done over the course of his career.
"This is gonna be just a really truthful, straight-forward statement," Kanye said. "The majority of things that are popular now are really directly based on something that I've done over the past 10 years. You can pinpoint it... I think it's amazing. I think I had a purpose. That was my purpose. To innovate. That's what I'm trying to say. So, if you hear something that sounds similar to something that I've done before, that is an extension of a new album, for me..."
