“The Martian” Takes Box Office With $55 Million

Just days after NASA announced findings that show water on Mars, Matt Damon's The Martian easily captured the weekend box office.

The 3-D space epic from Ridley Scott debuted atop the box office with $55 million. It stars Damon as an astronaut who was left for dead on a Mars mission.

Last week's top film, Hotel Transylvania 2, dropped to second with an estimated $33 million, earning $90.5 million in two weeks.

In third is Denis Villeneuve's drug war thriller Sicario, starring Emily Blunt. It shot up to third with $12.1 million.

The Intern lands at #4 with $11.6 million, while Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials closes out the top 5 with $7.6 million.
