The 2-year-old son of NFL star Adrian Peterson died Friday (October 11) in South Dakota, following injuries while in the care of the boyfriend of the mother.
According reports, the child was in critical condition in a hospital with severe head injuries since Wednesday (October 9).
The child was alone in the care of 27-year-old Joseph Patterson, where he lived with his mother. He called 911 to report a choking on Wednesday evening, but the Sioux Falls Police Department said it became clear at the hospital that the boy’s injuries were not accidental.
The baby had been on life support, and remained unresponsive, so the family made the decision to take him off of the ventilator.
Patterson was arrested and charged with aggravated felony assault and battery of an infant... and likely murder. He's being held on $750,000 cash bond.
The NFL star has sent out a series of tweets thanking everyone for their support. "God Bless everyone and thank u so much," Adrian Peterson wrote (@AdrianPeterson). "The NFL is a fraternity of brothers and I am thankful for the tweets, phone calls and text messages from my fellow players. Thank you to my family, my fans and fans of other teams for their support."
Adrian is planning the funeral along with the family of his son's mother.
