Fat Joe Gets Four-Month Prison Sentence For Tax Evasion
Fat Joe is headed to prison for failing to file federal income taxes.
According to the Associated Press, the rapper (real name: Joseph Cartagena) appeared in a New Jersey courtroom on Monday (June 24), and was sentenced to four months in prison for failing to pay taxes from 2007 and 2008.
Joe pleaded guilty to tax evasion back in December. Federal prosecutors accused him of failing to pay over $700,000 income taxes.
In court Monday, he apologized to the court, his family and supporters. "I did everything I could to achieve what I could, to move my family; I tried to stay positive, focus on the positive, and get myself out," Joe said.
"I guess I'm surprised, caused I worked so hard to not end up in court, that I'm here," he continued. "This is the last place I thought I would be."
Joe's attorney said his client has liquidated his retirement account to pay off his tax debt.
In addition to his prison stay, Joe was sentenced to one year of supervised release and fined $15,000. He's due to report to prison by August 26.
