Kimbo Slice Narrowly Escapes Knockout To Improve To 7-0 As Boxer

By Randall Stevens ⋅ Published 01/31/13

Kevin Ferguson (aka Kimbo Slice) isn't exactly headed for the heavyweight title, but he continues to push ahead in the world of boxing.

The once popular MMA star improved to 7-0 (6 KOs) in his professional boxing career Thursday (January 30), after narrowly escaping a knockout to finish 26-year-old Aussie Shane Tilyard. Tilyard, however, took the fight to Kimbo, who is 12 years older at 38.

At the beginning of Round 1, Slice looked faster and sharper than his opponent, but things changed quickly when he was caught with a series of big shots that wobbled him. From there, both fighters looked spent.

That continued into Round 2 with Tilyard throwing haymakers hoping to land the finishing KO. At one point, Kimbo ducked under a punch and tried to hold on, but performed an MMA style shoot-in take down instead.

Things looked dire for Kimbo, who took a few more big punches, but eventually landed a counter left hook to the body that ended the fight. Tilyard fell to the canvas in agonizing pain. It's unclear if he suffered any serious injury.

The fight showed that Slice's attempt at boxing may have come too late in age.
