Jovan Belcher of the Kansas City Chiefs was involved in a murder-suicide Saturday morning (December 1) at around 8 am.
Reports say he shot his girlfriend, Kassandra Perkins, at their home before going to Arrowhead Stadium and fatally shooting himself as team personnel attempted to stop him. The football player was just 25 years old and his girlfriend was 22.
The couple reportedly had an argument around 7 am this morning, then shortly after, Belcher shot her multiple times. She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Belcher's mother, who was visiting the couple and their 3-month-old daughter, witnessed the shooting.
When Belcher arrived at the stadium, he encountered General Manager Scott Pioli, Coach Romeo Crennel, and other team personnel, who attempted to keep him from committing additional acts of violence to no avail. When police arrived, they heard a gunshot and found that the NFL player had shot himself in the head.
The Chiefs released the following statement: "We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning. We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation."
