Everybody takes the Internet for granted. They don't realize what it actually is. It's a global system of interconnected computer networks, but how are all these computers connected? By miles of cables that stretch underwater from continent to continent.
The cable system is actually pretty amazing. According to TIME.com, the cables are called "tubes", or "submarine communications cables, which are giant cables laid on the seabed, carrying telecommunications signals between continents, countries and small islands in between."
The TIME article says there's 121 of these systems in place right now, with another 25 planned to be in service by 2013, and now you can see where they all are on a constantly updated interactive Google Map.
