After a record breaking weekend for Harry Potter last week, the battle of summer movie heroes continued this past weekend ... and it was Captain America who crushed the young wizard.
Paramount Pictures' "Captain America: The First Avenger" opened at #1 with $65.8 million, setting up next summer's all-star blockbuster "The Avengers."
It exceeded expectations for Paramount, following "X-Men: First Class," which opened with $55.1 million in June.
"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2," the eighth and final installment in the franchise, fell to #2 in its second weekend, taking in another $48 million to bring its domestic total to $274.1 million.
The weekend's other big release, "Friends With Benefits", opened at #3 with $18.5 million. The romantic comedy stars Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis as friends who try to maintain a strictly physical relationship.
"Transformers: Dark of the Moon" fell to #4 with $12 million, as it surpasses $325 million; and "Horrible Bosses" comes in at #5 with $11.7 million, taking its total to just over $82 million.
Opening in limited release, "Another Earth" made $78,413 on four screens in New York and Los Angeles. The Fox Searchlight sci-fi romance stars William Mapother and Brit Marling as strangers whose lives intersect after a deadly car crash.
That's a wrap for this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the sci-fi action "Cowboys & Aliens," the Steve Carell comedy "Crazy, Stupid, Love," and the animated big screen adaptation for "The Smurfs."
