"Rio" drew people in numbers to theaters this weekend, but the fourth installment of "Scream" didn't so much.
By the end of the weekend, the 20th Century Fox animated family flick "Rio," featuring the voices of Anne Hathaway and Jesse Eisenberg, led the box office with a healthy $40 million debut.
According to the Associated Press, the film earned the best debut so far this year, topping the animated "Rango" by about $2 million.
"Scream 4", the fourth in the horror franchise, opened at #2, but pulled in just $19.3 million, a small fraction of what the previous two sequels raked in more than a decade ago.
Last weekend's top film, "Hop", fell to #3 this weekend with $11.1 million in its third week; "Soul Surfer" held steady at #4 with $7.4 million in its second weekend; and "Hanna" fell from #2 to #5 with $7.3 million during its second weekend.
The AP says that business climbed for Hollywood over the weekend, which has been in a prolonged slide. Revenues rose for only the second time since last November, coming in at $134 million, up 12 percent compared to the same weekend last year, when "Kick-Ass" led with $19.8 million.
The weekend's other new wider release, director Robert Redford's Lincoln-assassination drama "The Conspirator," premiered at #9 with $3.9 million. It stars Robin Wright and James McAvoy in a courtroom tale of a woman accused of aiding Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth.
That's a wrap for this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the documentary "African Cats," "Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family" with Bow Wow and Lauren London, and "Water For Elephants", starring Reese Witherspoon and Robert Pattinson.
