Berkeley Rapper Blanco Drops Free LP With Cookin' Soul, Readies Another For Valentine's

BlancoBay Area rapper Blanco, hailing from Berkeley, has teamed up wth Spanish production sensations Cookin' Soul for a 10-track LP, titled Portrait of a Serial Killer, that dropped recently as a free download online.

Inspired by the 1986 John McNaughton-directed movie, Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Blanco recalls "locking himself in the studio" and recording the tracks in short order.

He then turned to the Spanish DJ, producers for assistance: "I seen some mixtapes they did -- they took like old Biggie and Pac songs and they remixed 'em over old horror movie beats like Susperia and Dawn of the Dead -- so I realized they were good at doing remakes and remixes."

What started out as only a couple of tracks, ended up turning into a full-fledged release, after both Blanco and Cookin' Soul loves how things were turning out. Download it over at CookinSoul.com.

The project features guests such as Nipsey Hussle, Lil B, Freeway, Redman, Gucci Mane, Dorrough, and Mistah Fab, among others. So far, Blanco has released a video for the Redman-assisted "Boss", with a clip for The Jacka-assisted "I Gotta Rap" to follow this week.

In a few weeks, on Valentine's Day, Blanco and his label, Guerilla Ent., are dropping the rapper's next album, American Psycho, the second part of this double-disc release.

Based loosely around the 2000 film of the same name, directed by Mary Harron, Blanco says that it is the end product of over a year of recording and "lots of hard and meticulous work."

When asked about how movies have influenced his musical projects, he explains: "I get a lot of my concepts from movies. Almost all my albums are based on some sort of film. Not all of 'em, but most of 'em are."

His camp's decision to release the album precisely at midnight on Valentine's Day, is due to the project's coverart, which Blanco says is kind of ironic.

"Have you seen the cover for it? I think it just fits well for Valentine's Day," he said. "It's kind of the irony of it 'cause it's kinda the exact opposite of a Valentine's Day gift."

American Psycho will be made available on iTunes, as well as other digital retailers.
