They replaced George Washington and his militia with RZA, GZA, Old Dirty Bastard and a legion of ninjas in "Victory Or Death", the limited edition fine art piece the Village Voice called "The finest painting of 2010". And this week, When Art Imitates Life (WAIL), the trailblazing art label founded by King Tech of the Wake Up Show and MTV's Sway Calloway, unveils "The Valley Of Kings", a new project created by Bay Area legends, the Hieroglyphics.
Conceptualized and directed by all members of the Hiero, the "Valley of Kings" piece consists of a very limited 300 canvases, each a whopping 40 x 40, signed by all crew members, and comes with an authenticity certificate.
According to WAIL, "The Valley Of Kings" represents another creative leap for Sway and King Tech's burgeoning art imprint, which is committed to giving the hip-hop pioneers the chance to immortalize themselves on canvas as well as wax.
Sway and Tech personally handpick every artist in the WAIL series, and act as intermediary between them and WAIL's team of graphic designers as they work together to create a portrait worthy of a legend.
The creation of "The Valley Of Kings" from conception to sign-off of the final artist proof took 12 months and involved everything from green-screening to drawing to Egyptian iconography. WAIL brought the Hiero crew members to the table with famed aerosol artist Eaz One to brainstorm and flesh out the creative core of the piece, which is said to represent the crew's 20-year journey, as well as the "supernatural" union between the members.
