Lupe Fiasco celebrated "Fiasco Friday" last week (October 15), where he and fans celebrated a victory over his label Atlantic Records, outside its offices, when they finally gave his long-awaited Lasers album a release date, following the announcement of a planned protest.
Lupe fans launched an online petition against the label this summer, asking that they release the long-delayed Lasers album. Then, last month, fans announced plans for "Fiasco Friday", a day they would rally outside Atlantic's New York offices to protest in support of the Chicago rapper.
However, shortly after the news, Lupe was able to work things out with the label, who caved and announced a date of March 2011 for the Lasers project.
Now, Lupe is taking on another major corporation -- a little company called MTV.
In a series of Twitter updates on Thursday (October 21), the rapper lashed out at the network following an editorial published on its website Thursday morning, called "Dear Lupe Fiasco: 10 Tips To Make Lasers Successful", in which they gave him a list of suggestions to make his forthcoming album a hit.
"Oh snap ... MTV (illuminati's favorite network) back on the attack ... why can't y'all just chill out? Salacious banality @ the speed of light?" Lupe wrote (@LupeFiasco).
"I think I've been very good natured with you. I personally know several employees of your company. You guys know me as well. I'm confused. Where is the true music journalism??? where is Suchin?!! What happened? Where are the honest critiques of cultural expression?"
Among the suggestions from MTV that Lupe was offended by were that he should stop participating in supergroups, call Kanye West "like, NOW" for a contribution, and take cues from labelmate B.O.B., who was featured on the hit track "Nothin on You" after Fiasco passed up the opportunity.
"What are we supposed to be learning from you? What is your point?," a heated Lupe continued in his Twitter rant against MTV. "Do you have a point beyond corporate sponsored distraction? Your a materialistic shell of your former self that can only identify with celebrity pageantry and instant gratification. Corporate garbage pushing plastic lifestyles and wasteful, destructive behavior into the brains of the youth of the world."
The Chicago rapper continued, explaining that he -- and the fans -- want the "REAL MTV back!", before warning of its pop culture relevance fading. He then invited them out to film something a little more productive than the "reality" programming its filled with.
"I'm going 2go be principal 4 a day @ a middle school in the hood. Care2 join me MTV??? The kids wld luv 2 see ya," Lupe wrote.
At press time, MTV has yet to comment on Lupe's remarks.
