In April, Murs and Guerilla Union surprised fans when they announced that Ice Cube would be headlining. It was a successful event.
The multi-act festival drew not only thousands of fans, but several local acts ... one, in particular, not in attendance was Watts rapper, Jay Rock. Given the tension between Jay Rock and Ice Cube, was there a connection as to why the Watts rapper didn't make it?
In a recent interview with Angela Yee, for her Shade 45 radio show (TeamYee.tv), Murs revealed that because of Cube's concerns over safety, he wasn't able to invite Jay Rock, who he is a good friends with.
"There was some fear on the part of other rappers that there might be something [beef] happening," Murs explained. "When certain artists [Ice Cube] come and you have to provide a certain amount of security for them [and] they are already in fear of what's gonna happen and you invite the person [Jay Rock] they may be in fear of, then he might not perform and I can't have that.
"I don't know Cube, I respect him, he's not a friend, but I know [Jay Rock's] Top Dawg [Entertainment] and that was hard," Murs continued. "I had to make a businessman decision. It was mainly my business partner that kept pushing me in that direction cause I was like 'F*** it, I don't give a.....'. But then for somebody [Ice Cube] to get on stage and talk sh** about the New West. I'm like why would you do that? We're young kids who respect you. I'm paying you to come out, but maybe he wasn't talking to me, maybe he wasn't talking to Jay Rock."
In the months leading up to the event, there was some controversy between Cube and a collective of rappers who regularly refer to themselves as the "New West" -- Jay Rock, being one of them.
Cube said in a blog entry on his website, IceCube.com, that he's not obligated to help anyone, especially Los Angeles newcomers who, he says, need to make a name for themselves.
"What's up with these local MC's in L.A. who keep disrespecting me? They're just mad cause I don't f**** with they wack-ass. They ain't on my level, why should I waste my time," Cube wrote back in March.
While Cube never addressed any artist directly, Jay Rock felt since the veteran rapper was disrespecting up-and-comers, it's as if he had called him out directly.
While onstage at Paid Dues, Cube took the opportunity to further address the situation, which Murs is refering to in his interview.
"It's been a gang of motherf***as talking sh** about your boy Ice Cube. I love it though ..." Cube told the Paid Dues crowd in April. "I got a message to all the new MCs in the house right now. I got love for all the MCs in the house right now, but if you diss the old west, I got a problem with you if you diss the old west. You can't diss Dr. Dre. You can't diss Eazy-E. You can't diss Ice-T. You can't diss King Tee. No, you cannot diss Ice Cube," he added. "No, I ain't going for it. And any of you young motherf***ers that do f***in' diss, I got one thing to say before you do it. You better check yourself before you wreck yourself."
Despite the lack of support from some of Los Angeles' vets, Murs isn't worried. He says the New West needs to just keep moving forward and not worry about being co-signed by an OG.
"If Dre won't put us on Detox, so f***ing what," Murs told Yee. "We're not mad at the old west, it's not an old and new thing. It's just, we have to get going. We can't be asked when Detox is gonna drop. We can't sit around and wait for it. ... In the meantime, we got to get money and make moves. I'm proud of Jay Rock and Nipsey and these newer names on the west coast."
