At The Movies: 'Inception' Tops Weekend Box Office, Leonardo DiCaprio Earns Best Debut Ever

Inception movieLeonardo DiCaprio dropped another mind-bending film over the week with Christopher Nolan, titled "Inception", and as expected it topped the weekend box office with $60.4 million.

The Warner Bros. action flick is about a team that sneaks into people's dreams, and has become DiCaprio's biggest opening weekend to date, topping his previous best of $41.1 million for last winter's "Shutter Island," according to the Associated Press.

Nolan, however, scored big with "The Dark Knight" in 2008, opening with a record $158.4 million during its opening weekend.

Last weekend's top movie, "Despicable Me" starring Steve Carell, slipped to #2 this weekend with $32.7 million. In 10 days, it's earned $118.4 million.

In at #3 was Disney's family adventure, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice", which raked in just $17.4 million over the weekend and $24.5 since its Wednesday premier.

"It's disappointing to say the least," Chuck Viane, head of distribution for Disney, told the AP. I have no response, because I honestly don't know what went wrong."

The flick stars Nicolas Cage, who teams up with producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Jon Turteltaub, for a story about an ancient wizard training an awkward apprentice (Jay Baruchel) to take down an evil sorceress in modern Manhattan.

"Twilight Saga: Eclipse" slipped from #2 to #4 this weekend with another $13.5 million under its belt, taking its domestic total to $264.9 million.

And rounding out the top 5 is "Toy Story 3" with $11.7 million in its fifth weekend.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the release of the the family film "Ramona and Beezus" starring Selena Gomez, and Angelina Jolie's action thriller "Salt."

This weekend's top 10 is as follows:

1 - "Inception," $60.4 million.
2 - "Despicable Me," $32.7 million.
3 - "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," $17.4 million.
4 - "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," $13.5 million.
5 - "Toy Story 3," $11.7 million.
6 - "Grown Ups," $10 million.
7 - "The Last Airbender," $7.5 million.
8 - "Predators," $6.8 million.
9 - "Knight and Day," $3.7 million.
10 - "The Karate Kid," $2.2 million.
