The Miami Heat celebrated their new acquisitions -- Chris Bosh and Lebron James -- with a welcoming event at American Airlines Arena in Miami on Friday (July 9), which they dubbed their "Three Kings", alongside Dwyane Wade, of course.
The city is ecstatic ... as they should be. So much so, the trio -- argubly the best to play together in NBA history -- received keys to the cities of Miami, Miami Beach and Miami-Dade County with the team's announcer pegging the arena: "Dwyane Wade's House," "LeBron James's Kingdom," and "Bosh's Pit."
After getting a warm reception from Miami fans, King James finally addressed the comments of his former team's owner, Dan Gilbert, who called his move to the Heat "cowardly betrayal", shortly after announcing his decision during his one-long ESPN special.
"I really don't have a reaction to what Dan said. When things hit the fan, you see a guy's true colors, and I understand that," Lebron said. "I wish the organization the best of luck and I wish the fans the best of luck, because I still do love those fans ... Dan's comments are not going to stop me and my family from sleeping at night. It just won't do it.
"I understand now I made the right decision. And to hear my former owner's comments, I also understand I made the right decision," he added.
Gilbert accused James of giving up during last season's Playoff run, and promised that his former star would not win an NBA championship before Cleveland does.
Friday's celebration was free to the public, which had to be obtained via pre-registration through TicketMaster.com. More than 13,000 fans attended with chants of "Yes We Did!" when their three new superstars came out -- all wearing Heat jerseys.
It wa televised live on Fox Sports Florida.
James will wear #6 on his uniform, as he promised last season to pay homage to Michael Jordan. He said he planned to petition to have his former number, 23, retired across the league to honor the retired NBA great. In our poll, 76% of visitors who voted agreed that the #23 should be retired.
Chris Bosh apparently will wear the #1. As a member of the Toronto Raptors, he wrote the #4.
According to the Washington Post, all three players signed six-year contracts for less than the maximum money allowed by the salary cap to give the Heat room to sign other free agents. James and Bosh signed for $110 million dollars, while Wade signed for $107 million. The team has been courting Lakers' guard Derek Fisher, but nothing is official yet.
Everyone is definitely excited about the Heat next season. What about you? Will Wade, James and Bosh be the team to beat next NBA season?
