The Broadway musical that Jay- Z helped produce, "Fela !," won three Tony Awards at Sunday's (June 13) televised ceremony.
The play received 11 nominations in total, including a nod for Best Musical and Best Leading Actor in a Musical.
Will and Jada Pinkett Smith also served as producers of the musical.
It won honors for Best Sound Design of a Musical, Best Choreography, and Best Costume Design of a Musical.
"Fela!" is a musical, as well as a book, by prominent choreographer Bill T. Jones and Jim Lewis, with music and lyrics by Fela Kuti, Aaron Johnson, Jordan Mclean. It is based on the events in the life of Nigerian composer and activist Fela Anikulapo Kuti, who is depicted as the target of soldiers determined to put an end to his public performances at a legendary Nigerian nightclub.
The play opened on Broadway in November 2009, after its 2008 off Broadway run ended.
Both Jay-Z and Beyonce, as well as Will and Jada Pinkett Smith, were present at Sunday's Tony Award ceremony.
Other winners during the evening include Denzel Washington for Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Play for his role in "Fences," Catherine Zeta-Jones for Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musicalfor "A Little Night Music," Scarlett Johansson for Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical for "A View from the Bridge," the Best Play went to John Logan's "Red".
