So, the mysterious Mortal Kombat movie trailer that's been making rounds on the Internet this week is not a trailer for a game ... it's actually a pitch for a full-length film.
If you've watched the seven-minute trailer, dubbed Mortal Kombat: The Rebirth, you'll notice actors Michael Jai White as Jackson "Jax" Briggs, Jeri Ryan as Sonya, and Ian Anthony Dale as Scorpion.
Well, Jeri Ryan addressed the clip on her Twitter page (@JeriLRyan), revealing that the MK preview was made as a pitch to sell Warner Bros. -- who now owns Midway, the company behind the video game -- on the idea of a Mortal Kombat reboot.
"Okay, so... Mortal Kombat. It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film," Ryan tweeted. "I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful...! ;-)"
From the teaser, the MK redux keeps the same gruesome brutality that gave the original game a mature rating, including the classic ending fatalities.
It was shot by Kevin Tancharoen, who directed last year's Fame remake.
The original Mortal Kombat film cam in 1995, behind director Paul W.S. Anderson, and was a success grossing $122 million worldlwide. However, the follow-up, Mortal Kombat: Annihilation, in 1997, was a box office failure, taking in just $51 million worldwide.
According to reports, an updated take on the franchise has been languishing in development hell.
No word yet if Warner Bros. have reacted to the viral teaser.
Stay tuned...
