Sprint officially unveiled the first U.S. 4G phone on Tuesday (March 23), which is able to tap into super-high speeds, as carriers hope to head the pack in next-generation wireless technology.
The new phone is the HTC's Evo, and it runs on the latest version of Google's Android operating system.
It features a large 4.3-inch touch screen, two cameras (including a front-facing one used for video conferencing), PC-like multimedia features, and boasts the ability to handle high-definition video. There's even a kickstand that allows it to be placed at an angle for video viewing.
"This is going to take multimedia to a whole new level," Dan Hesse, Sprint Chief Executive, said, according to the Wall Street Journal.
The device even falls back on Sprint's 3G network when 4G isn't available.
While pricing information has not been disclosed, the company says the plan to launch it in the summer.
"We believe the phone will be in a class by itself," Hesse said.
"I look forward to seeing some bandwidth-intensive application come out. The network speed is amazing," adds Peter Chou, chief executive of HTC.
Sprint has teamed up with Clearwire to provide 4G service, and says it will be available in several major cities including Los Angeles and Miami, 27 in all. But, even if you're not in a 4G area, the company's say it'll be the best handset on the market.
Verizon is Sprint's biggest rival, in the 4G market. They are currently building a 4G network, but does not expect to have 4G phones available until the middle of next year.
