Indie superstar Murs is preparing his fourth collaborative album with producer 9th Wonder. Once again, the pair have fans clamouring in anticipation.
This time around, the recording process for the upcoming ForNever album was a little different though.
On their first three collabo projects -- 2004's Murs 3:16: The 9th Edition, 2006's Murray's Revenge, and 2008's Sweet Lord -- the Los Angeles rapper found himself traveling to North Carolina, 9th's home state, to lay down the majority of the albums. But, when it came time to record ForNever, Murs wasn't having it.
Instead of making the trek back east, he made 9th Wonder travel to Los Angeles to record the album in its entirety.
The result is an album Murs says is very important to him, simply because they were able to work on his home turf.
"I try to bring home to North Carolina every time we do it, and it's hard," Murs explained to BallerStatus.com last week. "I think I accomplished it, like when songs like 'L.A.' and 'Walk Like a Man' (both from previous 9th collabos) came out. They are really L.A. songs. But, doing [ForNever] here, the whole thing is L.A. We got a song called 'Live From Roscoes' with Kurupt on it. You can't beat that."
According to Murs, the entire album has a west coast feel to it. Not only did he make sure his friends and closest associates were present in the studio during its creation, instead of 9th's, but he also toured the city with the producer.
While in L.A., Murs gave 9th Wonder the full experience, he says, taking him to hood swap meets and popular eateries, all to put him into a specific frame of mind ... and he says it worked.
"I was finally able to put 9th Wonder in a Chucks/Dickies frame of mind, and actually [come to Los Angeles]," Murs explained. "[I took him to] Slauson Swapmeets, to Crenshaw, to Earl's to get some food, to be in the hood with me, to meet my homeboys, to come f*** with Estevan [Oriol] and all my homies and SA Studios ... just everything about the west coast. Just how we some real players, and power moves, and be around my homies. I was comfortable with this record."
Although Murs was so adamant about keeping an L.A. vibe while recording, he says the producer was receptive to the idea and their creation turned into ForNever.
The upcoming album features guest appearances by Kurupt, Sick Jacken of Pyscho Realm, Uncle Chucc and Suga Free. And course, all production is handled by 9th Wonder.
It is due out March 30th.
