By Tim Boswell ♦ Published 03/08/2010

Alice in Wonderland 2010Tim Burton's "Alice In Wonderland" revamp drew in huge crowds over the weekend, enough to put them past the $100 million mark in its opening weekend.

The 2010 "Alice In Wonderland" landed atop the weekend box office, raking in $116.3 million, a record for a 3D film, said the Associated Press. The film's debut gave the flick an even bigger opening than "Avatar."

It also marked the biggest opening weekend for a non-sequel.

"This is just one of those cultural phenomenons that has caught everybody's interest," Chuck Viane, Disney's president of distribution, told the AP. "They don't come like this very often."

The weekend's other wide release of the crime thriller "Brooklyn's Finest," starring Don Cheadle, Richard Gere and Ethan Hawke. The film came in at #2, but waaaay behind "Alice" with just $13.5 million.

Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" followed closely at #3 with $13.3 million in its third week of release, bringing its cumulative total to $95.8 million; while the comedy "Cop Out" landed at #4 adding $9.1 million for a two-week total of $32.4 million.

Closing out the top 5 was "Avatar" with another $7.7 million.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for release of the thriller "Green Zone" with Matt Damon, the Forest Whitaker comedy "Our Family Weding," the romance flick "Remember Me", and the comedy "She's Out of My League."
