2K Sports' is gearing up for the release of its 2010 installment of their MLB franchise, Major League Baseball 2K10, and have launched a major contest as an incentive to pick it up.
In support of its release on March 2nd, the folks over at 2K are giving away a ridiculous amount of money to a gamer who can pitch a "Perfect Game."
Yes, a cool million will be awarded to the first gamer that pitches a "Perfect Game", verified by the title's publisher.
To be clear, this is 2K Sports' definition of of a perfect game, found in the contest's rules:
"A Perfect Game for purposes of these Official Rules is a game in which no opposing batters reach base (whether via hit, walk, being hit by pitch, or defensive error), entrant completes the game using entrant's original starting pitcher, and the team entrant controls wins the game."
With so much prize money up for grabs, it seems as though the feat may be next to impossible to complete, but 2K assures that pitching a perfect game in MLB 2K10 is "very doable."
2K Sports' director of marketing Chris Synder told gaming blog, Kotaku.com, that they have the money set aside and are ready to pay the winner.
"I would be shocked if someone doesn't get it," Synder told the site. "It's very doable. It's been budgeted for. It's in an escrow account, and we're fully expecting to pay it."
Synder himself has played the game and has come close to a perfect game. He claims he's "not the greatest guy" when it comes to playing MLB 2K10, so he assures this is real and possible.
"There's a possibility it doesn't happen, but I do think it will happen," he said. "I'm not the greatest guy at this game, but even I went eight perfect innings with Johan Santana. I say it is gonna get done."
According to Kotaku.com, a simple search of YouTube shows several perfect games thrown in the franchise's 2009 installment. But, in 2K10, pitching is a little different, thus could take a little perfecting before getting it down fully.
In [2K10], players select a pitch type with a face button and then execute the pitch with two gestures on the right stick. The setup is intended to to create more realistic variances in pitch quality than can be offered by pitch-meter gameplay, which players can quickly time for pinpoint accuracy.
2K Sports has launched a page on their website dedicated to the contest, 2KSports.com/PerfectGame, in which they spell out all the details, the rules, and the steps to make sure your perfect game can be verified completely.
Entrants must record their entire game, beginning five seconds before you boot up your system, either with a camera aimed at the TV or monitor, or recorded digitally.
The challenge is only available on PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game.
"We're using the analogy around here that there are 20 padlocks on the door," Snyder explained to Kotaku of the certification process. "Now, there might be some people out there who think they can still figure out a way to get around it. But the winner really is going to have to pitch this perfect game."
MLB 2K10 drops next week, so pre-order your copy now over at Amazon.com, and then, head over to 2KSports.com/PerfectGame for complete rules and info to battle for that $1 million.
