Ice Cube Announces New Album, Aimed At Resurrecting West Coast Rap

Ice CubeWest coast legend Ice Cube revealed this week that he's working on his ninth studio album.

Via a blog entry on his official website (IceCube.com), the rapper announced a title -- I Am The West -- and a tentative release date of July.

He calls his new material "no apologies, West Coast gangsta sh**", explaining that rappers from California have been catering their music toward a southern and mid-west style for too long, and things need to stop now.

Read Cube's full blog entry below:

I AM THE WEST ... is the name of my new record. After completing about 65% of my music, this is the perfect title. This sh** is cocky, no apologies, West Coast gangsta sh**. I can't help it. That's what I do. June seems too tight for a release, but July is very doable. We'll see how things go. Now that I have my title, I can work on the concept of my photoshoot and artwork. I want to provide early merch before the drop date.

For 7 or 8 years now, the West Coast has been trying to do music that appeals to the South and Mid-West. The words, "too West Coast" would be heard throughout the industry whenever our music was played. Even by our own dj's. Left coast MC's were now trying to change their sound to cater to all the followers. We lost our way. Thank God for b-boys like Snoop, The Game & WC for keeping the West alive, but we were all guilty of over reaching. No more. At least not from me. I do it how I feel it; not how I think it should be done. Radio f***ed us up. I hate the politics at radio. I don't know who to pay to get my sh** played. Having a hot song is not enough. Ridiculous.

I AM THE WEST. It's coming....

If Cube wants to resurrect the West he better reach out to the next generation instead of only keeping the OGs in the limelight. That’s the ONLY way the West coming back.

You want to show some West Coast unity holla at dudes like Crooked I.

I know I’m just dreaming but it would be lovely if Cube could record some music with Tha Eastsidaz, but we know that ain’t happening. Besides Bishop, Suga Free & Crooked, I can’t really listen to anybody else out here.

All I ask is that he stays the hell away from Dre, & anything Dre has going on.

Hopefully he remembers that he’s Ice. Mother. Fucking. Cube. That dude can run this whole state if he wanted to, really though.

If done right, that’ll be exactly what we need. Western Ave & Gage Stand Up!

I love the real west coast – I can’t agree with him on the west acting southern because at one time the west and the south wasn’t getting any attention nationally so they did collbos together that was season with both regional areas and made great music. But Mammon can change any one that don’t know themselves. I ain’t going to knock cube until I hear the finish project – it better be good cube.

We be clubbin – hey everyone’s a sell out in hip hop now. Mammon rules the foolish but we all need entertainment so let the jesters’ jest and we sit back and laugh. No one in hip hop well maybe 15% of them are serious but the 85% aren’t and this is what the masses love. If he keeps it like he should it will sell and be great. Contradiction at it’s best.
