Ivy League institution Harvard University is set to honor Wyclef Jean with their annual "Artist of the Year Award" later this week.
According to the Harvard Gazette, the former Fugees member will be presented with the prestigious medal by the Harvard Foundation during their Cultural Rhythms awards ceremony on Saturday (February 27), commemorating the impact his music has on the global population.
"His contributions to music and distinguished history of creativity have been appreciated by people throughout the world," Harvard Foundation director, S. Allen Counter, said in a statement. "He is admired worldwide for his humanitarian efforts on behalf of the people of Haiti."
Following the catastrophic earthquake that hit his native Haiti in January, Jean has been the country's main supporter in philanthropic efforts, via his non-profit organization Yele Haiti.
In the days following the quake he raised over $1 million in relief funds to immediately help the ravished country. He's since offered continued support to raise money on an ongoing basis.
The honor is a big one for the musician. Previous recipients include Will Smith, Sharon Stone, Jackie Chan, Herbie Hancock, and Oscar winners Denzel Washington and Halle Berry, among others.
The Harvard Cultural Rhythms festival will begin Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Sanders Theatre. The award will be presented around 4 p.m., and there will be an 8 p.m. performance.
