Apple has dominated the mobile market for a while now. The iPhone was a grand slam when the company first released it in 2007. While Google has already given the popular iPhone a run for its money with the release of its Nexus One in January, Microsoft is trying to gain a piece of the marketshare with the Windows Phone 7 software.
Microsoft hopes the "7" will help jump start their company in the mobile world.
"There's no question that a year and a half ago we had to rethink everything," Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said during the press conference here at the Mobile World Congress on Monday (February 15).
Windows Mobile software first came out in 2002, and it's finally got a revamp. The new software sports a new user interface resembling the look of Microsoft's Zune HD music player.
The "7" series refers to a set of touch-screen phones that will run the new operating system. According to CNET.com, Microsoft services such as Xbox Live and Zune will be integrated into Windows 7 phones.
The new Windows Phone 7 phones are expected to hit the market in time for the 2010 holiday shopping season.
