The hugely successful "Avatar" was finally dethroned from the box office's #1 spot after seven straight weeks, thanks to a little chick flick called "Dear John."
The Lasse Hallstrom-directed romance raked in $32.4 million at theaters, a record opening for Super Bowl Weekend, says reports, topping the $31.1 million debut from previous record holder: "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert".
The films, which stars Amanda Seyfried and Channing Tatum, is based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks. It centers around a long-distance love story between a soldier at war, and his girlfriend back home.
This weekend, "Avatar" slipped to #2 with $23.6 million. So far, it's raked in $2.2 billion worldwide, soaring past the $1.8 billion "Titanic" took in globally.
However, if you factor in today's higher admission prices, "Avatar" has sold fewer tickets than "Titanic."
The weekend's other new wide release was Lionsgate's spy story, "From Paris With Love," which opened at #3 with $8.1 million. It stars John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers as CIA men trying to crack a terrorist plot.
Mel Gibson's "Edge of Darkness" slipped form #2 to #4 this weekend, taking in $7 million; while The Rock's "Tooth Fairy" closes out the top 5 with $6.5 million.
The country-music tale, "Crazy Heart", expanded from narrow release and broke into the top 10 over the weekend, coming in at #8 with $3.7 million. It is about a drunk country star trying to turn his life around.
That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the Uma Thurman and Pierce Brosnan fantasy film "Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief", the romantic comedy starring Jessica Alba and Jessica Biel called "Valentine's Day," and "The Wolfman" starring Benicio Del Toro.
