Indie Los Angeles rapper Murs and concert organizers Guerilla Union announced the line-up for this year's Paid Dues Independent Hip-Hop Festival this week, and it's definitely a west coast affair.
In its fifth year, Murs' festival just continues to grow with bigger guests each year. This year, the line-up of west coast artists includes Tha Dogg Pound, Dilated Peoples, Strong Arm Steady, Freestyle Fellowship, Psycho Realm, People Under the Stairs, Del Tha Funky Homosapien and the headliner act, Ice Cube.
"When Chang and I first embarked on this adventure we now call Paid Dues, I never thought about the five year mark," Murs said in a statement. "I just wanted to make it happen. Then, last year being as amazing as it was and our biggest show to date, I was like 'Man, what are we gonna do for our 5th anniversary? It has to be big like waterslides and ferris wheels or something.' Then I thought, what could be bigger than that? I know, I wonder if we could get the godfather of west coast rap: Ice Cube."
Additionally, Murs will be taking the stage for his first-ever solo performance at the festival, which he is super-excited about.
"I'm super stoked," Murs said. "I've never got to do my own set at Paid Dues. I've done Coachella, Bonnaroo, Rock the Bells, but I've never done my own festival. I'm so excited to perform stuff off the new record me and 9th [Wonder] got called 'ForNever."
Other indie acts from around the country, set to take the stage, include Freeway, Tech N9ne, R.A. the Rugged Man and Curren$y.
Paid Dues is an all-ages show. Pre-sale begin Wednesday (February 3) for registered Guerilla Union members. Tickets for others will be available, via Ticketfly online, and at all locations starting Saturday (February 6).
This year's installment of Paid Dues follows the festival's fourth annual Southern California date in 2009, which featured artists such as Atmosphere, Tech N9ne, Living Legends, Brother Ali, B-Real, and Cage, among others. 2009 also marked the festival's largest show to date with over 7,000 attendees. The year before, the sold-out Southern California event featured artists such as Sage Francis, Little Brother, Hieroglyphics, Buckshot of the Boot Camp Clik, and Yak Ballz. And was also the year, it went on the road. In 2006, the first Paid Dues festival sold out with over 5,000 concert goers packing the Shrine Expo Center in Los Angeles.
