At The Movies: 'Avatar' Still on Top, Hits #2 on All-Time Top-Grossing Films List
By Tim Boswell ♦ Published 01/11/2010

For the fourth weekend in a row, the James Cameron science-fiction epic "Avatar" topped the weekend box office by a mile, beating out other wide releases such as "Daybreakers," "Leap Year," and "Youth in Revolt."

Over the weekend, the film raked in another $48.5 million, pushed it into second among all-time top-grossing films worldwide.

"Avatar" added $143 million overseas to raise its international haul to $906 million. With $429 million domestically, "Avatar" has pulled in $1.34 billion worldwide, behind only Cameron's "Titanic," which took in $1.8 billion.

In 24 days the sci-fi blockbuster smashed the domestic total of "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" to become the #1 release of 2009, and hit just over $100 million to go to pass the #2 domestic hit, "The Dark Knight", at $533.3 million.

"I think we'll get there very soon," Bert Livingston, 20th Century Fox distribution executive, told the Associated Press. "I believe anything is possible with this picture. Nothing would surprise me. There's a still a long way to go, and it's going to keep on playing and playing."

In at #2 this week was "Sherlock Holmes" with $16.6 million, while and 20th Century Fox's "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" landed at #3 with $16.3 million. Both films were in their third weekend, and have surpassed $160 million domestically.

Lionsgate's brand new vampire thriller, "Daybreakers," debuted at #4 with $15 million. It stars Ethan Hawke as a reluctant vampire racing to find a substitute for human blood in a world overrun by the undead in the near future.

At #5 was "It's Complicated," pulling in $11 million in its third weekend; and then, at #6, was the new romantic comedy "Leap Year," earning $9.2 million. The movie stars Amy Adams as a woman who finds love in an unexpected place as she chases across Ireland to propose to her boyfriend.

Outside the top 5, we had "Youth in Revolt" at #9 with $7 million. The film features Michael Cera as a teen going to extremes to win the heart of his dream girl.

That does it for this week. Next weekend, look out for new releases such as the highly anticipated Denzel action/adventure "The Book of Eli," and the action comedy "The Spy Next Door," starring Jackie Chan and George Lopez.
