At The Movies: Animated 'The Princess and the Frog' Leaves a Wet Kiss at the Weekend Box Office
By Tim Boswell ♦ Published 12/14/2009

2009-12-13-moviesIn its third weekend, the animated "The Princess and the Frog" took the weekend box office, beating out the new Morgan Freeman-Matt Damon flick "Invictus."

The Disney musical was the studio's first hand-drawn animated film in five years. It earned $25 million over the past weekend to earn the #1 spot at the moves.

Slipping to second-place this week was the inspiring sports tale, "The Blind Side," starring Sandra Bullock and chronicles the real-life story of Baltimore Ravens rookie lineman Michael Oher. The film earned $14.5 million to raise its total to $150.2 million.

At at #3 was the new Clint Eastwood film "Invictus," where Morgan Freeman stars as the South African leader, who uses an underdog World Cup run by the country's rugby team to help unite the racially divided nation. It earned $9.1 million.

Dan Fellman, Warner Bros. head of distribution, said Clint Eastwood films draw older audiences and tend to have a long life at the box office. "Invictus" debuted in the range of previous successful Eastwood films like "Mystic River" and "Million Dollar Baby."

"The Twilight Saga: New Moon" film fell from #2 last week to #4 this week, earning another $8 million, putting its total at $267; while Jim Carrey's "A Christmas Carol" rounded out the top 5 with $6.8 million.

That wraps things up this weekend. Next weekend, look out for the highly anticipated James Cameron film "Avatar," and the Hugh Grant comedy "Did You Hear About the Morgans?"

This weekend's top 10 is as follows:

1 - "The Princess and the Frog," $25 million.
