In the true spirit of the holidays, and in conjunction with the Washington Wizards' Twelve Days of Holiday Cheer, Washington Wizards' forward Caron Butler is set to hold his Big Bike Give this week in Washington DC.
The event will be held at the Verizon Center on Thursday (December 10).
Butler will fund and distribute more than 100 brand new bikes and helmets to children of military families, which include recipients who have lost a parent in combat or have a parent who is currently deployed for the holidays.
The children and their guests will also receive tickets to the Wizards' game that night against the Boston Celtics.
"Being charitable and giving back to the community is always important, but it is extra special this time of year," said Butler. "I hope this gift gives this particular group of kids an extra reason to smile. I can't wait to see their faces when they get their bikes because this is what the holidays are truly about."
Butler began surprising children with bikes in 2005 in his hometown of Racine, Wisconsin, when his young cousin and other area youth became victims of bike theft. From there, he decided to make a difference, and began purchasing bikes for kids in the community, thus beginning Caron Butler's Annual Bike Brigade.
He continued to give bikes to children in Racine and extended the event to kids in Washington, DC in 2007. To date he has financial supported and gifted over 2,500 bikes to children in both communities.
