This week, there's quite a few new releases, but it's releases from John Mayer, Norah Jones and Casting Crowns that knocked 50 Cent's chances of nabbing the top spot out of reach.
While John Mayer and Casting Crowns landed at the no. 1 and no. 4 spots, respectively, it was Norah Jones' fourth studio set The Falls that earned herself the no. 3 spot on this week's Billboard 200. After three straight no. 1 debuts, the singer settled for no. 3 this week, selling 180,000 copies of her album to start.
In at no. 5 is 50 Cent and his latest album, Before I Self Destruct, selling around 160,000 copies to earn his fourth top 10 set, and follows his 2006 no. 2 debut of Curtis.
In at no. 7 was the soundtrack for Michael Jackson's This Is It movie, selling 96,000 copies, putting it at nearly 800,000 sold.
Outside the top 10, British singer Leona Lewis came in at no. 13 with her sophomore set, Echo, selling 67,000 copies. Her debut set, Spirit, opened at no. 1 with 205,000 copies in April of 2008.
Rounding out the top 20 is a greatest hits set from Janet Jackson called #1's. It sold 37,000 to start.
That does it for the top tier releases, but we do have indie releases from Rakim and the Murs and Slug collaborative effort known as Felt.
Rakim's long-awaited release, The Seventh Seal, comes in at no. 61, selling just 11,000 copies; while Felt's Felt 3: A Tribute To Rosie Perez comes in at no. 111 with 7,000 copies sold.
According to Billboard.com, overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Nov. 22) totaled 7.98 million units, up 13% compared to the sum last week (7.04 million) and down 16% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (9.45 million).
