Chicago has always been known for their innovation in music, as well as style. Common burst onto the scene in the early '90s, Twista kept the flame lit with his unorthodox flow, and Kanye carried the torch, which set the world ablaze.
As time passed, hip-hop has evolved into another style, which is an uptempo club sound that most call "electro hip-hop". One person leading the charge in this relatively new form of musical expression is Chicago's own Kid Sister.
When asked about the "electro hip-hop" sub-genre, the female emcee says, "This is my genre of music, I am at the forefront of it, and I am the face of it."
While this style has been steadily moving into our local club scene, it has been in the making for many years. There is a direct influence from Baltimore's infamous uptempo club scene, and the classic hip-hop style that we are more accustomed to hearing. While many have added their own flavor to this uptempo sonic collage, DJ A-Trak and Diplo have been a driving force in the genre among others.
Many have helped Kid Sister along her relatively new musical journey, and she gives credit to her mentors in the game such as The Roots' drummer ?estLove, Dave 1, and Dj A-Trak.
"I'm kind of like a baby coming into this game, so to have veterans helping me it's great," Kid Sister admits.
One standout track, "Pro Nails," is a certified club smash, which features the Louis Voutton Don himself. Kanye heard the track while out in Europe and did not hesitate to put a verse on the anthem that brought Kid Sister to the masses.
"I didn't even know about it until I heard his verse on the track," Kid Sister states. "It's pretty dope that Kanye dropped a verse to it. He really doesn't work with many unknown people".
With a different sound, typically comes a different look. Kid Sister is well known for her quirky, out of this world outfits. Her stylist Erin Fetherston makes sure her client is stunning when she hits that red carpet. She dresses Kid Sister for award shows and live performances, so the style has to match the music.
"She personifies everything my music is. The quirky unexplainable, but apppreciated oxymorons," explained the rapper.
Kid Sister is currently on a national tour promoting her recently released debut, Ultraviolet. Her lead single, "Right Hand Hi," is shaking clubs across the country right now. The album features DJ Gant Man, London's sweetheart Estelle, and of course, Mr. West.

She also wanted to let every fan know, "I love you, you crazy motherf***ers. If you see me, please come by and give me a big fat hug. I love it, I'm a hugger I can't help it."
