The Kansas City Chiefs' star running back, Larry Johnson, has been released from the team, just shy was taking the team's all-time rushing record.
According to reports, the Chiefs announced the player's release on Monday (November 9) following constant off-the-field problems. Most recently, Johnson had made several comments on his Twitter page (@ToonIcon), including insults to fans, questions about coach Todd Haley's credentials, and even used a gay slur.
He was just 75 yards away from breaking former NFL running back, Priest Holmes' team record for rushing yards.
"A part of him is excited and a part of him is very regretful," Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, told The Associated Press. "There's a lot of feelings going on right now. It's analogous to breaking up with a girlfriend. Maybe you saw it coming, but it still hurts when it happens."
Johnson was a no. 1 draft pick choice back in 2003, and has gone on to become one of the best running backs with his best years coming in 2005 and 2006 when he rushed for more than 1,700 yards, earning two Pro Bowl appearances.
He had been suspended for his recent comments, his second suspension in a year, and was slated to return this week.
Last year, then-coach Herm Edwards benched Johnson for three straight games for violating team rules, for alleged incidents involving women in Kansas City night clubs. Then, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell suspended him for a fourth game for violating the league's player conduct policy.
Johnson was later sentenced to two years' probation after pleading guilty to two counts of disturbing the peace. One woman accused him of throwing a drink on her and another said he had pushed her head at a Kansas City night spot.
Johnson's career with the Chiefs ends with 5,996 yards rushing and 55 touchdowns. During his run with the team, he also recorded 151 passes for 1,369 yards and six TDs.
