Mariah Carey is currently getting rave reviews for her performance in the new drama "Precious," but in the past, when the 2001 bomb "Glitter" dropped, critics didn't think the pop diva was cut out for the big screen.
The "Glitter" disaster still brings back some painful memories for Carey. After all, critics did label the film one of the worst of all-time, and all the backlash eventually helped contribute to her hospitalization amid an emotional breakdown.
She admitted to Fox News recently that the film almost sent her to the grave, but says others are also to blame for the film.
"Being here is definitely a milestone. But I had one milestone that almost had me under this stone," Carey told Fox News recently. "I didn't realize you really have to be selective with the people that you work with and you have to have that support system and you have to work with people that you feel are geniuses."
In her role in "Precious," Carey went through a physical transformation, where she plays an unglamorous New York social worker. It's definitely the opposite image you see of her when she's walked red carpets glammed up to the max. But, she says the role was humiliating for her and has inspired her for other roles she wouldn't have taken on in the past.
"This was such a liberating experience and yet humiliating. But I needed that," Carey said. "We all need that, we need to understand how to be humble and it's a difficult business to do that in. But I'm definitely inspired to work out of my comfort zone after this."
"Precious" will hit select theaters on November 6.
